To learn more about these areas you can visit the 'Yellowstone (site)' link below.
We pointed out Madison Information Station as the access point to the Grand Loop Road, because it is nearby West Yellowstone. West Yellowstone is conveniently located to explore the Grand Loop. Other gateway communities are Cody, Gardiner, Cooke City and Jackson, but they may require extra driving. Of course you can also find accommodations in Yellowstone National Park. Keep in mind that if you would like to have some choice in where to sleep and what to pay, you have to make reservations between 6 months and 1 year in advance.
About driving distances in the park. A good rule of thumb is to double the mileage to get your driving time (eg: 30 miles will take approx 60 minutes). However, this doesn't allow for any sightseeing stops, traffic, or wildlife - which will be a factor at that time of day.
