The Shoshone National Forest offers superb scenery and endless recreational opportunities! The Shoshone National Forest was set aside in 1891 as part of the Yellowstone Timberland Reserve, making the Shoshone the first national forest in the United States.
The Shoshone National Forest is divided into five ranger districts.   Four Scenic Byways crosses those districts:
(1) The Chief Joseph Scenic Highway (State Highway 2960) and the Beartooth All-American Road (U S Highway 212) through the Clarks Fork Ranger District.

(2) The Buffalo Bill Scenic Byway (U S Highway 14/16/20 through the Wapiti Ranger District. A visitor center is located at the historic Wapiti Ranger Station.
(3) The Greybull Ranger District.
(4) The scenic Louis Lake Road (also called the Loop Road) through the Washakie Ranger District.
(5) The Wyoming Centennial Scenic Byway (U S Highway 26/287) through the Wind River Ranger District. This scenic byway climbs over scenic Togwotee Pass and leads to Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks and Jackson Hole.
