If you love mountain scenery, Hurricane Ridge is a must do trip. The seventeen-mile long Hurricane Ridge Road snakes up the side of the Olympic Mountains to 5,240 feet with plenty of opportunities to pull off the road for photos. Almost at the end of the road you will find the world class Hurricane Ridge Visitor Center. From here a fine network of trails awaits you and leads you through sub-alpine meadows and astonishing views of the surrounding mountains, from Mount Baker in the Cascades, to Mount Garibaldi in British Columbia's Coast Ranges to the interior Olympic peaks. Maybe you can spot some blacktail deer. Expect some windy conditions, it's called 'Hurricane Ridge' for a good reason. In summer you might even find some snow winter left behind. For more information see Outdoor Places and Kaleberg websites.
Between the Hurricane Ridge and Lake Crescent something happened that caught the attention of the local, national and international media, the nation's largest dam removal project, part of the Elwha River Restoration. See the 2013 Elwha River Restoration Brochure for more information and to see the points of interest. Among them you will find Former Lake Mills Access (Point 9 on our map) where you can explore a dynamic and changing landscape. The hike down the 0.4 mile Upper Lake Mills Trail takes you to the south end of the former reservoir.
Pull off the road, spend some time taking pictures, relax by the edge of the crystal clear water with a stunning blue-green color or plan a more formal stop, Lake Crescent   (map) will not disappoint you. At the Storm King Ranger Station you will find a trail that leads you to a pretty 90-foot waterfall popular with the summer masses, Marymere Falls.
There are only four temperate rain forests on the planet. Drenched in over 12 feet of rain a year, the Hoh,   Quinault and Queets (primitive wilderness with very limited access) Rain Forests, located in the foothills of the Olympic Mountains, are North America's best examples. This is why visiting the Hoh Rain Forest should be on your list of must sees. Some fine trails let you experience the old growth Sitka spruce and Maples covered in moss and the dense undergrowth of ferns, and other plants. Here the giant conifers dominate the rain forest. See the Washington Trails Association website if you would like to learn more about the Queets area.
Be amazed by one of the longest stretches of wilderness coast in the lower 48 states at Mora and Rialto Beach area   (Map) and Kalaloch and Ruby Beach area.   (Map) With some luck sea lions, seals, otters, whales, Western gulls, bald eagles, and other coastal birds can be spotted along the southern coast. Sandy beaches, rocky headlands, astonishing views of offshore islands, grassy bluffs and cliff side caves are yours to discover. Be always aware this is a tidal shoreline. While tidepools areas are fun to explore, don't get trapped by a rising tide!
When you are driving through Washington's Olympic Peninsula enjoy some of the most beautiful waterfalls this area offers. Find out about the waterfalls on this interactive waterfall trail guide or Waterfall trail overview guide and create your own magical 'Misty Tour'.
Olympic National Park is surrounded by the Olympic National Forest.
This is the official Park Map by the National Park Service. Be sure to check the Park's 'Maps' section to view more.
