At 8:32 Sunday Morning, May 18, 1980, Mount St. Helens Erupted. Shaken by an earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale, the north face of this tall symmetrical mountain collapsed in a massive rock debris avalanche. In a few moments this slab of rock and ice slammed into Spirit Lake, crossed a ridge 1,300 feet high, and roared 14 miles down the Toutle River. The eruption lasted 9 hours, but Mount St. Helens and the surrounding landscape were dramatically changed within moments.
Numerous viewpoints and miles of trails have been created for you to explore by car and foot. During the summer Forest Service interpreters lead a wide range of activities, from short walks to amphitheater presentations, to help you understand and enjoy this area.
Spirit Lake Memorial Highway on the west side or Forest Roads 25 and 99 on the east side takes travelers through vast blown down forest and views of the legendary Spirit Lake. Some excellent hikes awaits you here, such as Norway Pass Trail and Boundary Trail No. 1. See the Washington Trails Association to find out more. Some fine viewpoints along the way are Smith Creek Picnic/Viewpoint and Cedar Creek Viewpoint Interpretive Site.
You can also experience the Monument by taking SR 503, Forest Roads 83, 81 and 90.
You will find two visitor centers with information about the volcano: Johnston Ridge Observatory and Mount St. Helens Visitor Center at Silver Lake. You can also visit the Pine Creek Visitor Center,   the Science and Learning Center at Coldwater Lake Recreation Area. and Windy Ridge Interpretive Site.
