The Coon Rapids dam was built in 1913 by the Northern Mississippi Power Company.
From the 12-foot-wide observation walkway on top of the Dam enjoy spectacular scenery, the roar of the water, and rainbows in the mist. Some of the best bird watching in the metro area can be found in this park. The Anoka county Mississippi River Regional Trail crosses over the dam walkway and connects to Rush Creek Regional Trail (a.k.a. Elm Creek Trail; previously called North Hennepin Regional Trail) which leads to Elm Creek Park Reserve.

The Park has two Visitor Centers. The West Coon Rapids Dam Visitor Center offers an exceptional array of exhibits and material interpreting the River habitat. A highlight of the Visitor Center is the large aquaria. Next to the Visitor Center you will find a Nature Exploration Area designed for kids (and adults). The East Coon Rapids Dam Visitor Center offers park users equipment, facilities, and information about the Anoka County Parks and Recreation System.
