Located in a Mediterranean ecosystem, the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area contains a wide variety of plants and wildlife.
In the western edge of Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area at the Rancho Sierra Vista (also look at Brochure and Park Map) you will find (1) the Satwiwa Native American Indian Culture Center. Here you can experience Native American traditions.

The strenuous Backbone Trail System (also look at Brochure and Park Map) leads hikers, mountain bikers and equestrians through the Santa Monica Mountains for 67.8 miles from (3) Will Rogers State Historic Park (eastern terminus) to (4) Point Mugu State Park (western terminus). (5) Newton Canyon and (6) Topanga State Park are some of the access points to the Backbone Trail System.
