Mount Desert Island covers the main portion of Acadia National Park. A 27-mile (43 km) Park Loop Road system, part of Acadia All-American Road, offers outstanding views of the park's ocean shoreline, coastal forests, and mountain silhouettes. Start your visit at the Hulls Cove Visitor Center for your Acadian National Park adventure. From here the fare-free Island Explorer Shuttle Buses takes you to many park destinations. Learn more about a Car-free and carefree visitation in Acadia on the Friends of Acadia website.
There are many miles of shoreline to explore, 125 miles of hiking trails, and 45 miles of historic carriage roads (Map and Brochure). Kayaking, canoeing, tidepooling and swimming are just some of the popular outdoor activities. Bar Island trail is a very popular and easy family-friendly hike for tidepooling. Two beaches offer salt water (Sand Beach) or fresh water (Echo Lake Beach) in which to swim. Those beaches are also the starting point for some popular hikes, such as Ocean Path, Beehive Trail and Canada Cliff Loop. The two latest are part of Acadia National Park's classic "iron rung" routes. Don't forget to take in the panoramic vistas at the Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse, the only lighthouse on Mount Desert Island.
A variety of ranger-led programs will introduce you to Acadia's diverse natural and cultural history. Between mid-May and mid-October park rangers offer hikes, walks, boat cruises, talks, evening amphitheater programs, and children's programs. They also provide opportunities to view peregrine falcons and other raptors. Acadia National Park is also part of the Maine Birding Trail. Many of the ranger-led programs are specifically designed for children and families. Children of all ages can participate in the Junior Ranger Program.
