Utah Highway 12 is the major route to the Escalante Area, with side roads leading to established trailheads or starting points. A stretch of the road is known as the Million Dollar Highway to Boulder, because the cost to build it was a million dollars.

(11) Head of the Rocks Overlook: is a favorite stop for visitors traveling between Escalante and Boulder. It is the perfect place for travelers to take in the natural beauty of the region. Sweeping views over the Escalante Canyons region of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument (GSENM) and beyond to portions of Dixie National Forest, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Capitol Reef National Park, all the way to the Henry Mountains, have kept cameras clicking for decades.

(15) The Hogsback gets its descriptive name from the narrow section of Scenic Byway 12 that winds along the ridge between Calf Creek and Boulder Creek that reaches the brink of New Home Bench before descending to Haymaker Bench and Calf Creek Recreation Area. From the pullout at The Hogsback you can enjoy the sweeping views of the surrounding sandstone 'slickrock' country before continuing on your journey.
