Glacier Bay

Quick info

As its name implies, much of Glacier Bay National Park is water. Most of the land within the park is mountainous, covered with dense rain forest or alder thickets, and without roads or trails. While a few hardy travelers hike, raft, or climb the mountains, the vast majority of visitors travel by salt water. Glacier Bay is a natural waterway from Alaska's Inside Passage to the tidewater glaciers that are the park's main attraction. Its numerous branches, inlets, lagoons, islands, and passages offer virtually limitless opportunities for exploration.

Dry Bay is a world-class float trip destination on glacial rivers within the park. Dry Bay is not road accessible. Charter flights from Dry Bay can be arranged to Yakutat. To experience such a wilderness rafting, see the Crate website.
Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve can only be reached by plane or boat. Gustavus is considered the gateway to Glacier Bay National Park. Visitors will now be able to conveniently arrive in Gustavus along with their bikes, kayaks, and even personal vehicles aboard the ferry Le Conte, via the Alaska Marine Highway departing from Juneau. The only road merely connects the small town of Gustavus and its airfield to park headquarters at Bartlett Cove. For more information see the National Park Service 'Directions' section.
