More than 10,000 soldiers from the Army Corps of Engineers were assigned to the project, including four regiments of African American Engineers. The involvement of the African American army engineers in the construction of the highway is of great historical significance. The highway, originally called the Alaska-Canada Highway or Alcan, stretches 1,520 miles from Dawson Creek, British Columbia, Canada to Delta Junction, Alaska.
We mention the historic mileposts: Mile 0, Historic mile 21, Historic mile 73,... They are still used by residents and businesses along the highway to refer to their location, and in some cases are also used as postal addresses. Though they no longer represent accurate driving distance, due to reconstruction to shorten the highway. Read more at the Wikipedia website.
