Kitwancool now known as Gitanyow, is home to some of the oldest-known totem poles in British Columbia. One of them is called 'Hole-in-the-Ice', erected circa 1850 and still standing in its original location. It symbolizes the resourcefulness of a man who saved the people of his village from starvation one winter by catching fish through a hole hacked in the ice.
