This site has been used continuously by native people of the plains for at least 5,700 years to drove the buffalo to their deaths by chasing them over a precipice. At the buttom they were butchered to provide the natives with many of life requirements. Buffalo jumps were common on the northern Plains, but this particulary one is the world's oldest, largest and best preserved.
In 1981 it was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
